Don’t tag entire Chakma community as Militants, says APCSU

Taking objection at the alleged portray of Chakmas as “militants” during a protest rally by the members of the Mishmi Welfare Society (MWS) in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh, the Arunachal Pradesh Chakma Students Union (APCSU) on 2 March 2019 urged the MWS not to brand the entire Chakma community as criminals.

The statement of the Chakma students body has come after members of the MWS on 1 March took out a rally in Tezu, condemning alleged harassment of the villagers of Kathan in Lohit district by “Chakma militants”.

“There is no society free from the presence of criminal elements. At the same time, it doesn’t mean that all the members of a particular community are criminals. Therefore, it is wrong to tag the entire Chakma community as criminals because of a few misguided youths as the rally allegedly claimed”, said Drishya Muni Chakma, president of the APCSU in a press release.

The manner in the use of the words “Chakma militants” in the memorandum and banner of the MWS has the tendency to create confusion and brand the entire Chakma community as criminals, it added.

The APCSU, however, supported the demand for deployment of security forces to crack down against the anti-social elements or socalled Chakma militants in the area.
