Fratricidal killings have continued among the Chakma tribe in Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. On the morning of 15th July, Shanti Jibon Chakma, 40, a leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) (MN Larma) was gunned down by a gang of assailants in Matiranga Upazila of Khagrachhari. JSS (MN Larma group) blamed its rival the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) for the murder,but UPDF vehemently denied the allegation.
The killing of JSS leader was apparently in retaliation of the killing of a UPDF leader, Gyanendu Chakma, on 12th July by unidentified assailants at Alutila area of Matiranga upazila in Khagrachari.
On 13th July, Khagrachari sadar upazila chairman Chanchumoni Chakma, a leader of UPDF, was grievously injured in an attack in Khagrachari town. UPDF alleged that the groups of JSS (Reformist) and UPDF (Democratic) were behind the attack. The police arrested four attackers but did not disclose their identities. Chanchumoni Chakma himself is accused in the murders of Nannearchar upazila chairman Shaktiman Chakma, UPDF (Democratic) president Tapan Jyoti Chakma and four others in May.
The Chittagong hill districts have witnessed a series of murders and attacks in recent months.
On 8th July, a leader of UPDF and 14 villagers were abducted at gunpoint by some miscreants from Kaukhali and Naniarchar upazilas in Rangamati .
On 3rd May, Nannearchar upazila chairman and PCJS (Reformist) vice-president Shaktiman Chakma was gunned down at his office. A day later, UPDF (Democratic) president Tapan Jyoti Chakma and four others were shot dead on their way to the funeral of Shaktiman Chakma.
On 22nd April, a UPDF leader, Sunil Bikash Tripura alias Kathang, was killed and another man was injured in a clash over establishing supremacy in Mortila area of Panchhari upazila in Khagrachari district.
