There is no place called “Indian occupied Kashmir”: Sushma Swaraj’s stinging reply to an Indian seeking help from foreign land

Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj on Thursday rebuked an Indian seeking her help from the Philippines in getting a new passport as she objected to his Twitter profile that said he is from “Indian occupied Kashmir”.

“If you are from J&K state, we will definitely help you. But your profile says you are from ‘Indian occupied Kashmir’. There is no place like that,” Ms Swaraj said, responding to his request for help.

Sheikh Ateeq requested Ms Swaraj to help him in getting a new passport and said he needed to get back to his home as his health was deteriorating.

“I am from J&K doing medicine course here in Philippines my passport got damaged I applied for new one 1 month ago I request u pls help me to get it as i literally need to go home for medical checkup (sic),” Sheikh Ateeq tweeted (his twitter account is now deleted).

After Sheikh Ateeq corrected his profile, Ms Swaraj asked the Indian Embassy in Manila to help him. “He is an Indian national from J&K. Pls help him”, she ordered.

The External Affairs Minister is known for using the social media to reach out to Indians in dire situations and help them.

She is famous for saying, “Even if you are stuck on the Mars, Indian Embassy there will help you”, in response to a person who said on twitter he is Mars and running out of food.
