The BJP government in Tripura has reconstituted the “Advisory Committee for Development of Chakma Language” to be headed by Sambhulal Chakma, Member of Legislative Assembly.
The Directorate of Kokborok and Other Minority Languages, Government of Tripura issued a notification in this regard on 27th April which stated the functions of the Advisory Committee as follows:
- To advise the state government in the matter of development of the Chakma language
- To advise the state government in the matters relating to use of Chakma language in education
- To advise the state government in preparation of curriculum, syllabus, grammar, dictionary, text books, etc for Chakma language
- To advise on any other aspects relating to or relevant for the purpose of promotion of Chakma language in Chakma populated areas.
The Advisory Committee for Development of Chakma language has many prominent names including Sambhulal Chakma (Chairman), Niranjan Chakma and Aniruddha Chakma (Members) who have been at the forefront of the Chakma language movement in the state. One of the main demands of the Chakmas has been teaching of Chakma language in Chakma scripts, instead of Bengali scripts, in schools and appointment of adequate number of Chakma language teachers.
Three Chakma IAS officers are included as “Special Invitees” i.e. Tushar Kanti Chakma (IAS), Pratap Chakma (IAS), and Tarit Kanti Chakma (IAS). Sandhya Rani Chakma, Executive Member, Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) is another Special Invitee.
State Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath and Social Welfare Minister Santana Chakma are the Patrons in the Advisory Committee.
