I&B Ministry forms committee to regulate online content, including news portals

After the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting was forced to withdraw the notification on withdrawing of accreditation of journalists found propagating “fake news” following interventions from Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself, the I&B Ministry headed by Smriti Irani has constituted a committee to regulate online media content.

The order for “constitution of committee for framing regulations for online media/news portals and online content” was issued by the I&B Ministry on 4th April. [Copy of the “Order” given below]

It said, while there exists well-settled mechanism to regulate the print and electronic media, “there are no norms or guidelines to regulate the online media websites and news portals including digital broadcasting like entertainment/ infotainment & news/ media aggregators.”

The 10-member committee is headed by Secretary, I&B Ministry.
